Chapter 19: The Gala

At a quarter to seven on Saturday I stood on the steps of the Menger Hotel in my mother's silver dress.

It had hung in the east closet for twenty years. Sasha had taken it in at the waist with safety pins and a lot of swearing.

Gabriel stood beside me in the black suit he had worn to his father's funeral.

He had not said anything since he saw me on the stairs at home.

He had only looked, and then he had put his hand on the banister.

"You're staring," I said.

"I know."

"Is that allowed?"

"I'm checking whether it's a mistake." He held out his arm. "It isn't."

The Houston investor was waiting under the awning with his glasses in his pocket.

"Mrs. Cordero," he said. "Mr. Cordero. Shall we?"

At the ballroom door a young man in a hotel blazer checked a printed list.

He looked at me, and then at a photograph clipped to his clipboard.

It was a photograph of me, taken at my wedding.

"Ma'am," he said politely. "I'm very sorry. I'm told you are not to be admitted."

"She's with me," the investor said.

"I'm sorry, sir. The host committee was specific."

"I am the sixth-largest contributor to this evening's fund." The man put a business card on the clipboard. "I'm also the largest creditor of the host's son. Call your manager, and tell him that if my guest is turned away, so are eleven checks."

The young man looked at the card.

Then he looked at the ballroom behind him, where a hundred and sixty people in evening dress were taking their seats.

He stepped aside.

I walked in on Gabriel's arm.

Conversation did not stop, exactly. It stumbled.

I felt it go through the room from table to table, the turning of heads and the lowering of voices, and I kept my chin up and walked.
