Chapter 21: Sign Where the Tabs Are
The lobby of the Menger had a marble floor and a fireplace nobody was using.
They stood Rafael in front of it between the uncle and a cousin, with his tuxedo jacket hanging open.
The Houston investor held out the blue folder.
"Mr. Cordero," he said. "We have a short list."
Rafael looked at the folder and then at the ten men behind it.
"I want my lawyer."
"You may call him from the car." The woman with the briefcase stepped forward. "There are three pages. The first transfers the assets of Calloway Capital to the eleven of us in satisfaction of what you owe, and I am told that is most of what you own."
"You can't do that tonight."
"You are free to explain why not to the state attorney's office," the woman said. "I have a copy of the filing with your signature. So does everyone in that ballroom."
Rafael said nothing.
"The second page voids the note on the Larkin house. It was obtained through a document you told someone not to let a dying man read." The woman turned the page. "My clients will not enforce it."
He laughed, once, a dry sound.
"And the third?"
The investor looked at me.
I came forward and stood in front of my husband in my mother's dress, with a handkerchief around my palm.
"The third," I said, "takes your name off my mother's deed."
His mouth worked.
"You signed me onto it with flowers and a pen," I said. "I never read it. I'm reading this one."
I took the folder from the investor's hands. I opened it to the third tab and held it out.
"Sign where the tabs are."
He stared at me.
It was what he had said in the bedroom, with a woman in my mother's robe behind him. I watched him hear it.
