Carlton Fairbanks did not walk to the stage.
He stood at the head table with one hand flat on the cloth, and he waited until every head had turned.
"May I have the microphone," he said.
It was not a command.
It was the first time Eli had ever heard him ask.
Eli stepped aside, and Carlton came up the steps slowly.
He took the microphone off the stand and held it in both hands.
"I wrote that clause," he said.
His voice was low and hoarse.
"My son asked for it, and I put it in the contract without reading past the first line."
He looked out over the room.
"I want every person here to know that. It was my signature."
No one moved.
"Eli, I'm sorry. I mean it."
His voice cracked.
"I offered you a way out that was a room with a bad lock, and then I called it a choice."
"As of tonight, clause nine is struck from every Fellowship contract, past and present."
He turned to the trustees.
