He Made Me Sign, Not Knowing I Was Another's Wife novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Pen
Leona signs a no-contact order in front of her ex Clay and her brother Hugh, who stream it to the family; she signs calmly because she is already another man's wife; the family chat mocks her ring and plans to have her held on the wedding day.
I signed the no-contact order in a courthouse conference room, with my brother and my ex-fiancé watching.
My brother had a video call running on his phone, propped against the water pitcher.
Our whole family was on the other end, watching me sign.
The order was four pages long.
It said I had stalked my ex-fiancé, harassed him, and shown "emotional instability."
It said that on his wedding day I was not to come within one mile of Trinity Church.
Anyone who broke it would be arrested.
Hugh was sure I would refuse.
If I screamed, he'd have a fresh video for a judge, and he'd keep his hand on the money our mother left me.
Clay set the pen down in front of me himself.
"Sign it," he said. "And don't come crying to me on the wedding day."
He was smiling.
He had gone cold on me a dozen times in four years, and a dozen times I had chased him.
The last time, I had followed him up to a hotel rooftop and asked him why, in front of a hundred guests.
Hugh touched my sleeve. "Lee, please just sign. I'd rather a pen settle this than a judge."
He gave me a tired, kind look. "Mom's money is easier to look after when things are calm."
I picked up the pen.
They both stared.
I didn't throw it. I didn't raise my voice.
I signed the last page and slid the order back across the table.
"Is that all?"
For once, Hugh had nothing to say.
Clay kept looking at me. "That's it? You have nothing to say?"
I stood up and gave him a small smile.
"I do. I wish you every happiness."
The smile left his face.
All he saw was a piece of paper that kept me out of his wedding.
He had not read the line that said he couldn't contact me either.
He couldn't call me, write to me or come near me, now or after the wedding.
On the courthouse steps I turned the plain platinum ring on my left hand.
The woman who would have gone mad for him had stopped existing four months ago on that rooftop.
And nobody in that room knew the one thing that mattered.
The order wasn't my chain.
It was a wall, and I had signed it gladly, because I was already somebody's wife.
My phone buzzed before I reached the street.
It was my Aunt Ruth, my mother's sister.
Hugh had left her in the family group chat by mistake. He said she couldn't work her phone.
She could. She sent me a screenshot, then another.
The group was called Project Nightingale.
Under the order, Hugh had written: Signed. 11:42.
His cousin answered in seconds. "She really signed it?"
"She was way too calm," someone else wrote. "That's an act."
"Just wait for Saturday. She'll fall apart in the street."
A third person had dug up an old clip from a dinner party.
Clay had missed our anniversary, and I had knocked a wineglass off the table asking if he still loved me.
They had cut off everything before and after it.
It was their favorite proof that I was unstable.
Vivienne Thorpe, Clay's fiancée, sent a relieved face.
Then a photo from the courthouse steps came up, taken from across the street.
I had my hand raised against the camera.
Someone zoomed in on my fingers.
"What is that on her ring finger?"
"Looks like a wedding band."
"Hugh froze her cards in the spring. She can't afford a wedding band."
"It's a drugstore ring. She's wearing it so Clay will see."
Vivienne posted a picture of her own hand on Clay's shoulder.
Her diamond filled the frame, and the Nantucket house stood behind it, all glass, over the water.
"Don't worry, Clay gave me the real one," she wrote.
Laughing faces covered the screen.
They kept tagging me, though I had left the group a week ago.
Hugh finally wrote, "Enough. She can wear a bottle cap if she likes, as long as she stays a mile from the church."
Then Vivienne again, in her sweetest voice. "Leona, I never wanted to hurt you. I hope you find your own happiness someday."
Everyone praised her for being so kind.
Right under that she added: "Also, Clay's brother finally RSVP'd from Norway. First answer he's sent anyone in six years, so please nobody be weird about it."
I scrolled past.
Clay hadn't answered Vivienne. He hadn't asked whether the ring was real.
He had typed only: "Enough."
Then Ruth sent a last screenshot, from Hugh, alone, in the group.
"The doctor is booked for Saturday morning at the house. Seventy-two hours' observation. Once it's on file, no judge moves the trust off me for a year."
My thumbs didn't shake.
I stood on the courthouse steps and wrote to my husband, saved in my phone as Ansel.
"Signed. They think I'm beaten. They're planning to lock me up on the wedding day."
The answer came before I put the phone down.
"Then let them think it. I'll be there before Saturday."
