Chapter 14: Forty Seconds

Bea had the laptop open on her kitchen table when we got there.

She was still in her scrubs, with a mug of coffee going cold at her elbow.

"Don't sit," she said. "Look."

Declan stood behind my chair, and I felt him go stiff.

The video was titled Lake Weekend Vlog, Part 1.

Delphine's channel was young then, and the thumbnail showed her in a white knit hat with her tongue out.

The upload date was the Saturday of the cabin party.

"Four years ago," Bea said. "I found it in a cache of a fan site that mirrors her old posts. She made it private the next morning. They never took the copy down."

She pressed play.

The picture was bright and shaky.

Snow, a bonfire, ten people in puffy coats holding paper cups.

Tobin sat on a log with his gap-toothed grin, and he waved at the camera with both hands.

I made a sound I didn't know I had.

"Emme," Declan said.

"I'm fine."

Delphine turned the camera on herself.

"Hi, my loves, we are at the lake and it is freezing, and tonight I have a surprise for somebody very special."

The camera swung.

A woman in a yellow scarf was laughing at the fire.

It was me.

I was twenty-five, and I had no idea.

"Part two tonight," Delphine said, in the warm voice she still used. "You will not believe it."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

"That's all of it?" Declan said.

"That's the post," Bea said. "Part two was never uploaded. But look at the credits."

She pointed.

Under the description, in small letters: Filmed by Delphine and her camera girl.

"One camera girl," I said.

"The pale braid," Declan said, very quietly.

I stood up so fast the chair scraped.
