Chapter 10: Sunday

Sunday morning the housekeeper was in the kitchen when Kevin came down.

Lucas was at the table with a cup of coffee and the paper.

Kevin didn't say good morning. He went into the study and shut the door.

Lucas turned a page of the paper and read the same line twice.

Seven minutes later the door opened again.

"Lucas."

Lucas looked up.

"Come here."

The housekeeper was at the sink with her hands in the water. She didn't turn around.

Lucas got up and walked down the hall.

The study was a wreck.

The file boxes were on the floor. Two of them were open. Papers fanned across the rug.

The desk drawers were all pulled out. The blotter was on the chair.

And Kevin was standing in the middle of it holding one page.

"There are thirty-one pages in this folder," Kevin said.

"Okay."

"There were thirty-one pages in this folder on Thursday."

"So."

"So this one was in the wrong place."

He held it up. It was page six.

"It was behind page nine. Somebody put it back wrong."

Lucas looked at the page.

"Maybe you did."

"I didn't."

"Then maybe your father did."

"My father hasn't been in this room in two years."

Kevin came around the desk.

"Who else has a key to this house."

"The housekeeper."

"She's had that key for eleven years."

"Then it wasn't her."
