Chapter 16: The Man from the Video

The DP took the card home with him that night.

Kevin drove back to the hills alone. Lucas took the bus.

Nobody said anything for four days.

Kevin slept in his own room with the door shut. He left before eight every morning.

On the fifth day Lucas's phone rang.

It was a new phone. A cheap one he'd bought with cash at a store on Sunset.

Only three people had the number. Mateo, Daniel, and the DP.

He looked at the screen. No name. A number he didn't know.

He answered it in the second bedroom with the door shut.

"Hello."

"Lucas."

Lucas sat down on the edge of the bed.

He knew the voice before he knew anything else.

"How did you get this number."

"Your brother. He gave it to me at the hospital."

"Mateo gave you my number."

"He didn't know it was me. I told him I was an old friend of yours."

Lucas put his hand over his eyes.

"What do you want."

"To talk."

"We talked. In April."

"We didn't talk in April. You stopped answering."

"I stopped answering because my life came apart in April."

"I know."

"Then why are you calling me."

There was a pause on the line.

"Because I read the second piece."
