Chapter 14: Plain Is Fine
I wore a gray cardigan and plain black pants, and I left Poppy in the hall with a court volunteer.
She was a retired teacher with a lanyard, and she had already offered to hold a baby for anyone who asked.
Byron's lawyer sat beside me at the table.
He was a heavy man in a brown suit who had been paid in Honeycrisps for six years, and he had not slept either.
"Do not look at the grandmother," he whispered. "Look at the judge."
Across the aisle sat Eleanor in navy, with her own attorney and a binder two inches thick.
Brady sat behind them.
He had shaved badly, and there was a cut under his chin.
The courtroom had a dozen people in the benches, mostly strangers who had come for another case and stayed.
The judge came in, a woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain, and she frowned at the stack of papers.
"This is an emergency petition for temporary custody of an eleven-day-old infant," she said. "Mr. Angell's mother has filed with him. Counsel, you have twenty minutes."
Eleanor's attorney stood up and read from his binder.
He said unstable, and he said hysterical, and he said that Mrs. Mercer-Angell had disrupted a private club luncheon with a newborn on her chest.
He said I had struck a man in his own kitchen.
"Who?" asked the judge.
"Her brother-in-law, Your Honor."
"Is he here?"
Byron stood up in the second row.
He had the faint mark still on his jaw.
"Yes, ma'am. She hit me once. I had it coming."
A few people on the benches laughed.
"Sit down, Mr. Angell," said the judge. "Both of you."
