Chapter 32: Everybody Lies to Me

Nobody on the gravel said a word.

Brady took a step toward the boy with the cap crushed in his fist.

"Hey, champ," he said. "I have to tell you something, and I need you to let me finish."

Cal didn't move.

"My name isn't Ray. It's Brady. Brady Raymond Angell." He swallowed. "I'm Byron's brother."

Cal looked at him for a long moment, and then he looked at Byron.

"You knew."

"Since yesterday," said Byron.

"So he's my uncle."

"Yes."

The word hit him, and he flinched.

"In July," he said to Brady. "When you called my mom. Did you know he was my dad?"

"Yes."

"The whole time."

"I found the folder in my mother's study, and I didn't know how to tell you."

"You took me to the Browns game. You bought me wings. You said you were a friend of the family."

"I was trying to help."

"Everybody lies to me!" His voice cracked across the whole stand. "My mom said he didn't want me. You said you were just a guy. And you," he said, to me, with his eyes wet, "said you'd tell me everything."

"I found out yesterday," I said. "I was going to tell you in the truck."

"You all knew. Every one of you."

He turned on Brady again, and his voice dropped to something that scared me more.

"You said I could be the one to tell them."

Brady's face went gray.

"Tell us what?" I said.

"Nothing," said Cal.

He looked at the line of customers, who had all stopped pretending.

"Get out," he said to his uncle. "Don't text me. Don't pick me up on Fridays."

Brady put the cap on his head, and he stood there a moment longer.

There was nothing left to say.

He walked to the silver sedan and drove away down the gravel without looking back.

Tara had stayed by her car with her arms wrapped around herself.

"Get in, baby," she said.

"I'm not your baby," said Cal, and he got in.
