Chapter 34: Gran

Cal looked at his mother's face, and he told her.

"Gran is Mrs. Angell," he said. "Byron's mother. She's in the prison at Marysville."

Tara took one step back and bumped the stove.

"You've been going there."

"Since August. Once a month, on a Sunday."

"Who took you?"

"Ray."

The name hung in the kitchen.

"He said it was a secret until I was ready," said Cal. "He said you'd be upset because of the money. He said Gran was sorry and wanted to see me, and that she'd never gotten a chance to meet her real grandson."

"Her real grandson," Tara whispered.

"She cried the first time. She held my hand through the table." His voice wavered and steadied. "She told me she'd been wrong about a lot of things and she was trying to make it right."

"That woman," said Tara, "paid me to disappear."

"I know. She told me. She said she was ashamed."

"She said she was ashamed."

"She said it was the worst thing she ever did, and she wanted to spend the rest of her life fixing it. She said she couldn't fix it from a cell, but if I helped, she could be home by Christmas."

Byron had not moved from the doorway.

I could see the muscle jumping in his jaw.

"What does she want you to do?" he asked, in a voice so quiet it was almost gentle.

"Write a letter," said Cal. "To the judge, for the ninth. She says a judge lets older people out early when a grandchild needs them. I wrote it at the table in the visiting room. I copied what she said and I changed some of the words."
