Chapter 47: Yes

"Ask me what?" I said, on the courthouse curb.

"Where," said Byron. "I want to ask you at home. In the orchard, under the Honeycrisp, with whoever you want standing there. Or just us. You pick before I do anything."

I looked at the truck.

Cal had rolled his window down and was pretending to study the dashboard.

Tara was pretending to fix Poppy's hat.

"Everybody," I said.

The first snow came down on the farm at four o'clock.

It fell in big slow flakes over the bare rows.

The paper lanterns were still strung in the branches from October, a little tattered, and Byron had lit every one.

Cal stood on a hay bale with Poppy zipped into a snowsuit on his hip.

Tara stood beside him with her hands jammed in her sleeves.

The silver-haired woman had come out from town in a long wool coat.

She stood with her handbag in the snow, because she had refused to miss it.

Byron waited under the tree.

He had shaved, and the snow was settling on his shoulders.

He took off his glove to take something out of his pocket.

"I put your name on a deed once without asking," he said. "I'm better at this now. I asked first, I waited until after, and I'm asking in front of witnesses."

"Nobody's telling you no," said Tara.

"Tara."

"Sorry."

He knelt down in the snow in his good coat.

"Lacey Mercer," said Byron.

He held up a plain gold band.

"It has no stone. I didn't think you'd want one. Look at the inside."

I took it from him and turned it to the lantern light.

Inside the band, in small letters, was engraved: Mercer.

I laughed, and then I was crying, and then I couldn't tell the difference.

"I'm not changing it," I said.
