Chapter 12: Thirty-Three Weeks
"No," I said.
I said it from the top of the stairs, loud enough for the neighbors' porch light to come on across the street.
His mother's smile didn't move.
"Dear, you haven't read it."
"I don't need to. You want my signature saying I knew about Jasper for years."
"It would simplify things."
"For whom?"
She lowered the paper a little.
"For the household. For Randall. A divorce is a messy thing, Stephanie. A lawyer for you might say a great many unpleasant words about concealment and misused funds. This protects everyone."
"This protects you."
"Stephanie."
"You've known for five years. You told him to pay it from the household so there wouldn't be a trail. You stood in my kitchen the morning after my daughter's party and told me to be gracious."
Dennis had taken out his phone.
He held it up, and the red light was on.
"I'm recording this," he said pleasantly. "For the family."
The lawyer looked at the phone, then at his briefcase, and took one step back.
"We should go, Mrs. Reeve," he murmured.
"Don't be ridiculous."
"Mother."
Randall had come to the top of the stairs behind me.
He walked down past me, and I watched his back.
He stopped on the last step, between his mother and my brother.
"Go home," he said.
"Randall, don't be dramatic."
"You told me to hide it. You told me it was the kind thing. You told me Stephanie would break if she knew."
"She would have."
"She's standing here."
"Randall..."
"I said go home, Mother. Please take your lawyer with you. Don't come back to Dennis's house."
