He Missed the Delivery Room. I Married His Enemy Instead. novel · Chapter 25 of 32
Chapter 25: Live
The sergeant took the cop away in an ambulance with two patrolmen sitting on him.
I went back to bay one and sat beside Conall until he woke.
At two in the morning they moved him to a room on the fourth floor with a window on the harbor.
I slept in the chair.
At eight my mother brought Niamh, a bag of clean clothes and a thermos.
"Your father's parking," she said. "Your grandfather's telling the nurses' station about the time he was shot in Cork."
"He was never shot in Cork."
"He knows that. They don't."
Conall was awake, propped up, his left arm strapped across his chest in a sling.
He held out his good arm.
My mother put Niamh in it.
Niamh looked at the sling, looked at his face, and grabbed a fistful of his beard with both hands.
"Ow," Conall told her. "Fair."
At nine-fifteen there was a knock on the open door.
Davis stood there in yesterday's suit.
He hadn't shaved.
His campaign pin was still on his lapel, crooked.
His phone buzzed in his hand, and buzzed, and he didn't look at it.
