Chapter 13: Where You Left Me

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Brett broke it first.

He dropped the manila envelope on the counter beside the coffees.

"Dad wants you at the Bingham gala on the fifteenth," he said to Quincy. "He wants your signature on that, and he wants you in a suit."

"Get out, Brett."

"I'm going." He looked at me once more. "He gets everything he wants in the end. I just thought you should see how."

The front door closed behind him.

His footsteps went down the stairs and faded.

I stood in the gray kitchen in Quincy's shirt and found out I could still talk.

"Where were you when you read it?"

"My father's house," Quincy said. "Sunday dinner. Brett left his phone face up by the bread plate."

"And you picked it up."

"A message lit the screen. It said June is obsessed with you." He kept his hands at his sides. "I took it into the powder room and read the rest."

"The rest of six months."

"Yes."

"The part where I tell him my mother stopped calling me after the divorce."

"Yes."

I had typed that at midnight in October, curled on the floor with my back against the radiator.

I had never told Roxie.

"And the one at two in the morning," I said. "Where I ask him what I did wrong."

"Yes."

"I was crying when I wrote that. Not a lot. Just enough to have to wipe the screen."

He said nothing.

He didn't try to soften it, and that made it worse.

"You read me like that before I knew you were alive," I said. "Then I walked into you outside the rec center, and you let me ask for your number like it was my idea."
