Chapter 9: The Garage

Noah showed them the photo at breakfast.

Troy swore and slammed his mug down.

Henry said, very coldly, "She has the gate code. She's had it since she was twelve."

"Change it," Troy said.

"My father changes it when he's home," William said. "He's in Lisbon."

He took the phone, looked at it for a long time, and handed it back.

"I'll drive you to campus," he said to Noah. "Troy, Henry, give us a minute."

The Bennet garage held six cars.

William's was the black one at the end, with leather seats the color of butter.

He opened the passenger door and Noah got in, and William went around the front and got in the other side.

Neither of them started the engine.

"I should have changed the code," William said. "I should have done a hundred things. I want you safe in my house."

"I'm not a guest, William."

"No."

"Then stop treating me like one."

William turned in the seat.

"What does that mean?"

Noah looked straight ahead at the garage wall.

"At the engagement dinner," he said, "the three of you stood up with your glasses. Your father made a toast. You said, we'll be like brothers to him."

William's face went still.

"I remember."

"I went home and baked for six hours. My mother asked what was wrong and I said nothing." Noah's voice was steady, and his hands were not. "I'd wanted you for two years, and you looked at me, all three of you, and told me I was your brother."

"Noah."

"You didn't know. I know that. But I heard a door close."

"I was lying," William said quietly. "We all were. I couldn't say anything else in front of my father."

"Then say it now."

William's jaw worked.

"I don't want to be your brother."

"Say the rest."

"I want you. I've wanted you since before I knew your name. I wake up and my first thought is whether you've started the bread."
