Chapter 12: Sunday
On Sunday morning, before the dock, I asked him again.
I found him at the foot of the Convent terminal's long gangway, in a dark suit I had not seen, with his hands in his pockets and the river wind in his hair.
"Soren," I said. "Is there something you can tell me now?"
He looked at me for a long time.
"Not before the dock," he said. "After. I swear it."
"You swear," I said.
"On the captain's name."
"That's not your name," I said.
"It's the only one I've got," he said.
It was the first thing he had ever said that I could not answer.
The spring-rise meeting of the Verlander family has been held on the Convent dock every year since 1962.
The river is at its widest in May, a mile of brown water with the sun on it.
The whole company comes to stand along the planks and agree to whatever the old captain's widow has decided.
That Sunday there were forty captains in their good caps and wives in print dresses.
A deputy from the parish sheriff's office stood by the rail.
