Chapter 13: Both True

Five weeks after the church, Damon was out on bail and back at his desk.

I knew because the legal aid lawyer had told me so, twice. His family's lawyer had not answered a single letter about the divorce.

I was thirty-five weeks along and could no longer see my feet.

On a Tuesday morning I walked into the lobby of Carraway Realty with a copy of the folder in my tote bag.

The floor was white marble, and the company name was in brass letters on the glass wall.

The receptionist stood up when she saw me. "Mrs. Carraway, I don't think..."

"It's DeSaussure," I said. "He's in, isn't he?"

Behind her, a dozen agents sat at open desks. Every one of them stopped typing.

Damon's office was at the back, with a glass door. He had already seen me through it.

He came out buttoning his jacket, and his face was friendly and careful.

"Lena. You look well." He held out an arm toward his office. "Come in and sit down."

"No. Here is fine."

"This is a private matter."

"You made it a private matter. That's why I'm here."

I took the first page out of the bag and held it up where the desks could see.

I read it out loud, slowly, so nobody had to guess.

"Clean. No family to ask questions. Agreeable. Says yes."

A man near the window put down his coffee.

"The date on it is eighteen days before you proposed," I said.

"Your mother wrote that about me. And on the next page you wrote, 'She'll do.'"
