Chapter 15: The NICU

The neonatal unit was one long room of warm light and small beeping machines.

A nurse wheeled me in at seven the next morning, and I saw her at once.

My daughter lay in a clear box with a tiny knit cap on her head and a thin tube taped under her nose.

She was breathing fast, with her fist up beside her ear.

"She's doing well," the nurse said. "She just needs help with her breathing for a day or two."

I put my hand through the round porthole in the side of the box.

She turned her face toward the sound of my breath.

I would have stayed there for the rest of my life.

Quinn was already beside the box in his wheelchair, with his cast propped on the armrest.

He had been there all night. His shirt was the same one, and his eyes were red.

"She wrapped her whole hand around one of my fingers at four a.m.," he said.

"She did that to me too."

"I know. I'm only telling you so you know I was there."

"You don't have to tell me that."

"It's what I'd say to be sure." He glanced up at me. "How are you?"

"Sore. Happy. Terrified."

"That's the right order."

The double doors at the end of the room opened.

Damon came through them, in a pressed suit, with the family's lawyer on one side and a woman in a hospital lanyard on the other.

I rolled my wheelchair across the doorway of the incubator bay.

"Stop right there," I said.

"Lena." Damon had a soft, wounded voice ready. "I came to see my daughter."

"You came to take her."

"This is a woman from hospital administration," the lawyer said. He had a pleasant, tired face, and I had once watched him eat a whole slice of pecan pie at Judith's table. "She's here to explain how this works."
