Chapter 7: Coffee

Delia was already at the window table when I walked into the bakery on Mill Street.

She stood up as I came in.

She wore the soft blue cardigan, no makeup, and her eyes were red.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I didn't think you would."

"Neither did my sister."

"Wren hates me."

"Wren hates everyone for the first year."

She laughed, and then covered her mouth, because she had started to cry.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm a mess. I haven't slept."

She had already ordered.

There was a flat white at my place and a plate with a warm almond croissant.

"I remembered what you like," she said.

I looked at the flat white.

The smell alone made me queasy.

"I'm not drinking coffee right now," I said.

"Oh." She blinked. "You've never said no to a flat white."

"It's been upsetting my stomach."

"Of course. Stress does that."

She pushed it aside, flagged the waiter, and asked for ginger tea.

I thought, for a moment, that it was a kind thing to do.

"Libby, I need to say this properly," Delia said.

She folded her hands on the table.

"The dare was mine. I made it up in the car on the way over, because I was being silly and I wanted to see if he'd say no. He always says no when it matters. I thought he'd say no to this."

"He said what time."

"I know." She winced. "I heard it too. I wanted to die."

"You booked the chapel in a minute."

"I'd had the booking page open for days." Her cheeks went pink. "That's the truth. It was a joke I'd been building. I never thought it would go past the last step."

I did not say anything.

She looked at the table.
