Chapter 15: Boston Rules
The auction house on Charles Street had a marble staircase and a head appraiser with a pencil behind her ear.
She shook my hand on Friday morning and showed me a worktable by the window.
"Your old boss says you can tell a silver plate from a sterling spoon blindfolded," she said. "We'll see."
By ten o'clock I had priced a tea set, a cracked music box and a trunk of linens.
By ten-thirty I had a bad feeling.
Two of the clerks stopped talking whenever I walked past.
One of them held her phone low, and I saw my own face on it.
Shelby had posted the one-cent poster in a Boston neighborhood group.
Under it she had written: This woman married a stranger four days after leaving her fiance, and she's starting at an auction house. Check your valuables.
It already had four hundred comments.
I put my pencil down.
The head appraiser saw it too, and her mouth went flat.
"Don't answer it," she said. "Come on, we have a client at eleven."
The client was a tall man in his seventies, with a camel coat and a silver-topped cane.
He had brought a porcelain vase wrapped in a blanket, his late mother's, the centerpiece of her estate.
He unwrapped it on the table with both hands.
Then he saw me.
"That's her," he said, to the head appraiser. "The woman from the post."
"Sir, she works for us."
"She sells herself for a cent and marries a man she met on Tuesday. I won't have her put a price on my mother's things."
