Chapter 11: What the Fire Kept
The notice faded from the sky, and Gabe's thumb was still moving along my jaw.
"Tomorrow," he said quietly. "He wants you alone."
"He wants me on that patch."
"Then we'll talk about tomorrow tomorrow."
I looked at him in the gold light.
I had died once and come back, and I had a day of cold behind me and another one coming.
I did not want to spend the night thinking about Brett.
"Not tonight," I said.
"Lacey."
"I'm not asking you to take care of me. I'm asking you to kiss me again."
His eyes went dark.
He pulled me up off the plank by both hands and walked me backward through the glowing gap in the ooze wall, and I laughed against his mouth the whole way.
Dee had been busy.
Behind the wall, at the center of our little street, the blankets were piled thick on my patch, with a lit log burning low at the foot.
Her stew pot sat to one side with a note taped to the lid that said: EAT FIRST.
TinyTurnip and the quiet one had gone to the far patches and pulled their blankets over their heads.
Nobody was within sixty feet of us.
"Dee," Gabe said, "is the most terrifying woman I have ever met."
"She's right, though," I said, and sat down on the blankets and pulled him down with me.
We ate the stew.
It lasted about four bites.
Then he took the bowl out of my hands and set it aside and looked at me for a long moment.
"Come here."
"I'm right here."
He smiled, the first real, unguarded smile I had seen on him.
