Chapter 5: The Storage Room

At three in the morning I stood in the dark beside Gull Point House with a tote bag on my shoulder.

Conal stood next to me with his hands in his jacket pockets.

"You're sure about this," he said.

"My laptop is in the event office. My contracts are in the event office. So is the box of envelopes."

"You cancelled the lease."

"I wrote the lease. The service door code is mine until Monday."

He looked up at the lit windows on the third floor.

"Gisela didn't move out at midnight."

"Of course she didn't."

I typed the code into the side door, and the lock gave a soft click.

We went in through the kitchen.

The caterers had left it spotless, and I felt a pang of fondness for every one of them.

The hall beyond was dark except for a lamp at the far end.

Two flashlight beams were moving along the staircase.

"Guards," Conal breathed. "Lowell family."

"They're early," I whispered back. "They shouldn't be down here for another hour."

"They're checking the doors."

The nearest door was a narrow one beside the pantry.

I opened it and pulled him in after me.

It was the linen closet, shelved on three sides and barely wider than a person.

I pulled the door nearly shut.

Conal stood behind me with his chest against my back, because there was nowhere else for him to be.

The flashlights swept past the crack of the door.

Footsteps passed, then paused, then went on.
