Chapter 11: Fifty Thousand

Jenna's POV

I went downstairs in Sam's shirt and let Brooke into my shop at 5:40 in the morning.

I don't know why.

Part of me wanted to see her without the smile.

She stood in the cold front room under the hanging ferns and looked me up and down.

"So that's how it is," she said. "You didn't waste time."

"I'm not on a break," I said. "He doesn't say that word."

Her mouth twitched.

It was the first real expression I had seen on her face.

"I need to talk to you," she said. "Alone."

"He's upstairs. He's staying there."

"Fine. It doesn't matter. Everyone is going to know anyway if you don't take this."

She put the envelope on my counter.

Inside was a cashier's check, made out to me, for fifty thousand dollars.

I looked at the zeros for a long time.

"What is this?"

"Vegas is real," Brooke said. "I know it is. It's a mess, and it can be fixed."

Her voice was steady and quick, with no xx in it.

"You sign the paper he gave you, the dissolution. It goes through in six weeks.

"Then Travis and I go back to the courthouse, quietly, and do it again. No one at the club ever finds out."

"And I get fifty thousand dollars."

"You get fifty thousand dollars and your shop and your life back. You get to stop being a joke."

"A joke."

"Everyone saw you at the toast, Jenna. Everyone saw you tear up a card."

I put my hand flat on the counter next to the check.
