Chapter 6: Envelopes

I read the line again.

Then I pushed the page back across the desk.

"Tatum was in that room," I said. "She was standing next to him. Filming him."

"Filming what?"

"Him. On a chair. With his laptop over his head."

The dean looked at me for a long moment.

"Then that's something a hearing will want to hear," he said. "Good afternoon, Ms. Archer."

I didn't tell my mother.

I couldn't make the words fit in a phone call.

So on Friday she drove up from Delaware County in her good blue coat.

She sat in the third row of the auditorium with Jodie's fiancée.

She held a sign she'd made on the back of a school bus route map.

MY DAUGHTER THE DOCTOR.

The auditorium held six hundred people.

Every seat was full.

Parents, grandparents, toddlers on shoulders, balloons tied to armrests.

On the stage was a table with a white cloth and a long tray of envelopes, one for every fourth-year in the class.

The dean stood at the mic.

"When I call your name," he said, "come up and receive your envelope. At noon, we open them together."

He started with the A's.

"Maura Archer."

My mother screamed.

I walked up the steps.

The dean's assistant was standing by the tray.

She looked at the dean.

He shook his head once, very small.

She folded her hands.

I stood in the middle of the stage with nothing.

The dean leaned toward the mic.

"Ms. Archer's envelope is being held," he said. "Pending a review."

Six hundred people went quiet.

I walked down the far steps and sat back in my row.

I didn't look at the third row.

The names went on.

"Judson Cantrell."

Judson went up in a navy suit.

He didn't get an envelope either.

He got a white letter, already open, the one the scramble had sent him on Thursday.
