Chapter 11: Blood Law
The Council stood in a half circle under the great windows, twelve of them in black, with the Regent in the middle.
I came in with Torin a step behind me and the King's ring on my thumb.
I hadn't slept, and I hadn't washed.
I wore the clothes from the night before, and I wanted every one of them to see it.
"Highness," the Regent said gravely. "My condolences. My brother was a great king."
"He was your brother."
"I grieve him as one." He lifted a scroll. "But the law does not wait for grief. Blood Law, from the founding: no crown passes to an unmated heir. The princess must stand before the Hall with a mate beside her within three days of the King's death, or the regency holds."
"I have a Trial in two days."
"You do. And if you pass it, you will still be unmated." He sounded so sorry. "You were rejected, Highness. Your mark is gone. You have no mate."
Torin made a very low sound behind me.
I did not look around.
"There is a remedy," the Regent said. "A rejected wolf may be reclaimed once, within one moon, by the one who rejected her. If he speaks the words again, the bond is restored, and nothing is lost."
He turned toward the door.
"Alpha Holt."
Jasper walked in.
He had shaved, and somebody had pressed his jacket.
He looked at me, and I knew in one look that the Regent had been working on him all night.
"Alpha," the Regent said kindly. "You may speak."
Jasper opened his mouth.
I stood very still.
I thought of the clinic and the ridge and the hall steps.
