Chapter 15: Right of Challenge
Willa's POV
Imogen sewed his arm up in my sitting room at dawn, with the dead man's blood still on the floor.
She worked in silence, and Torin sat through it with his jaw set.
The silver had left a grey line along the wound that she said would take a week to fade.
"Keep the token," I told him afterward, when we were alone. "Don't show it yet."
"Why?"
"Because it only says a gate post in Cedar Hollow. The Regent will say a rogue stole it." I turned the brass in my fingers. "I want the man who gave it out."
He nodded slowly.
Then he looked at me for a long moment.
"You're thinking like a queen," he said.
"I'm thinking like someone who was lied to by a Beta."
The Council was seated when we came in.
I had washed and put on a plain dark dress, and I wore the King's ring where everyone could see it.
Torin walked a half step behind me, with his arm in a sling.
The Regent rose.
He looked well rested, and I hated him for it.
"Highness," he said. "I have spent the night with the old texts. The Seer's reading is final, as she says. You are the princess, and the Captain is your mate."
A murmur went through the twelve.
"I congratulate you both," the Regent said, and he sounded almost sincere. "It is a bond a hundred years old. I had not thought to see it."
I did not answer.
I did not trust a word of it.
"But the throne is not given by a bond," he went on. "The Trial is older than Blood Law. A claimant must prove the wolf, and prove it before the Hall, and the Council must be satisfied."
