Chapter 21: Every Word of It
Willa's POV
Imogen got to him in a minute, with her sleeves already rolled.
She packed the wound and said a short word I had never heard her use.
"It missed everything that matters," she told me. "He needs a bed and ten days."
"I'm not leaving till it's done," Torin said from the floor.
"You'll leave when I say."
"Then say after."
Imogen looked at me, and I nodded.
They propped him against the dais where he could see the Stone.
He was grey in the face, and he did not take his eyes off me.
The Guards put the Regent in front of the black rock with two on each arm.

"You cannot do this," he said. "I am the King's brother. I hold the regency by right."
"You held it by right," I said. "Put your hand down."
"I will not."
"Then they will put it down for you."
Two Guards forced his palm flat.
He made a noise through his teeth.
The Alphas stood in their half circle.

"Did you give my father wolf's-tongue?" I asked.
"Yes."
His mouth snapped shut, and it came out anyway.
"Every night for two years, in the evening draught, through my physician. He would not die and he would not name an heir who was alive. A man cannot wait forever."
The lake woman said one word under her breath, and it was not a kind one.
"Did you send the hunters after my mother?"
"I sent them." He was white now. "She took the child over the pass in a blizzard. I told the court they were dead. The hunters came back and said the tracks went west, and then no more tracks. I thought the cold had done it. For twenty-four years I thought so."
