Chapter 24: The Last Ferry
Rhiannon's POV
The first spring ferry left on the second Friday of April, and the pack came down to the dock to see it go.
It was a bright cold morning with a hard blue sky.
The harbor was full of light, and the first crabbers were out on the sound with their lines trailing.
I stood on the stern with a coil of rope over my shoulder.
I wore my own jacket and my own gloves, and my own name was stitched inside the collar.
The captain had put it there himself in March, in white thread, in a careful hand: *M. Etheridge, lead deck.*
Doran stood at the bollard.
He had stood there every morning for five months, with a mug in his hand and his father's coat on his shoulders.
I did not look at the pilothouse.
I looked at the church.
It stood across the lane with its door open.
Inside, on the wall over the pew where my mother used to sit, hung a frame.
Hester Ballance had had it made in March.
It held the note on the yard, both halves of it, taped back together with every seam showing, under glass.
Beside it hung a smaller frame with a line of black ink copied out in my hand.
*Rhiannon Etheridge works off the note on the deck at her own wage, owes nothing else to any wolf on this island, and answers to no man's mark.*
