Chapter 25: The Root Rope

Torin drove us down the ridge in the dark with both hands on the wheel.

The Beta rode in the back with Cedric's head on his knee.

Nobody said anything until the lodge lights were gone behind the trees.

Then Torin pulled onto the shoulder and cut the engine.

"Is it true?" he said.

I looked at the windshield.

"I don't know."

"That isn't an answer."

"It's the only one I have." I turned to face him. "Ember."

She came up slowly, and she did not want to.

"Tell him what you told me," I said. "The part you left out."

"I didn't leave it out," Ember said. "I didn't know it until Rhoda said it. Then I remembered."

"Remembered what?"

"My mother's mother told me. Before the tonic."

I repeated it aloud for Torin, word by word.

"The ropes come back one at a time. That part is safe. Twelve proved it."

"And the rest?"

"There is one rope under all the others. The root. It can't go back to a single wolf." My voice stayed level. "The whole pack has to take it up at the same moment, each wolf with their own hand."

"And if one doesn't?"

"If one wolf is too frightened and grips, the root doesn't drop. It comes back up through me."

"Through you."

"All of it. Every wolf's weight at once." I made myself finish. "Ember says nobody lives through that."

Torin did not shout.

He sat very still, and I watched the muscle in his jaw jump twice.

"You let me stand on that bank for three weeks," he said.

"I didn't know it was real. I thought it was Rhoda, doing what Rhoda does."
