Chapter 28: Rhoda Burns Her Garden

The sixty stopped at the yellow line in the middle of the bridge.

Their torches burned pale in the noon light.

The big man in the leather coat walked out in front, with the hand truck rattling behind him.

He was the one who had taken Rhoda by the arm at the lodge.

"Luna," he said.

"Morven."

"Morven." He nodded. "We didn't come to cross. We came to ask the pack law."

Torin put his hand on my shoulder and I shrugged it off.

"Ask," I said.

"Rhoda gave us this barrel and told us it was medicine. Half of us drank from it at the lodge before your man did." He looked at the ground. "We want her judged. Today. Out in the open, in front of both banks, and we want that thing burned."

"The Wolf Moon is nine days off."

"We know. We can't sit in the west barracks for nine days looking at each other." His voice cracked. "My wife drank it. She won't get out of bed."

I stood very still.

Behind me, the old elder had come out of the infirmary on his cane.

"The pack law lets any hundred ask for judgment," he said. "Sixty is not a hundred."

"I'll make it a hundred," said the cook who had crossed the market green for me.

She walked up the bridge with her chin high.

Forty Ironwood wolves came after her, and then more, because Torin had told them to stand wherever I needed.

Within an hour there were four hundred people on the bridge and the two banks.

They brought Rhoda out of the cold room at three.

She had been dressed in her wool coat again, by someone's kindness, but her hair hung loose and her hands were bound in front of her.
