Chapter 20: Homecoming

Mrs. Froster moved into the penthouse on a Sunday in a borrowed wheelchair.

She sat in it until the nurse turned her back.

"I'm not an invalid," she told the nurse. "I'm a woman who has been lying down."

She stood, wobbled, and was caught by both her sons at once.

By nightfall she had inspected every room and rearranged the kitchen.

She had also found the spare room, which neither of them had mentioned.

It had a window onto the city, a wide low mattress, and a heap of cushions, blankets, and shirts piled in a ring.

The shirts were Felix's, and Casper's, and a few Felix had bought that were too large for either.

"Well," she said from the doorway. "I thought it was a heap of laundry, but you've arranged it."

Casper went scarlet.

"It's a nest, Mom. It's an omega thing. We've both been, it's hard to sleep without one."

"I know what a nest is, dear. I made one when I was carrying you."

She looked at Felix.

"I like the grey one. Where did it come from?"

"My first suit," Felix said. "The one I wore to sign the loan on the tower."

"Good. Keep it on top."

She closed the door on them with great dignity, and they heard her walk down the corridor, humming.

Casper dropped onto the mattress, laughing silently into a pillow.

Felix lowered himself beside him, hand on his belly.

It had grown fast in the last month.

His own was rounder, and Casper's was lower and heavier, and they had both given up on belts.

"She approves," Felix said.

"She approves of everything. It's frightening."

"She told me yesterday I'm too thin."
