Chapter 5: The Ward
The doctor on call took one look at Casper's chart and then at Felix, and did not bother to be polite.
"Double-strength blockers for three weeks," she said. "On a body his size. Then an abrupt stop. Who prescribed this?"
"A man I'm going to ruin," Felix said.
She raised an eyebrow and wrote something down.
"He's stable. The fever will come down with fluids. But the heat he's been holding back is not gone, it's waiting. Once the drugs clear it will come all at once."
"When?"
"Tonight, tomorrow morning. Don't leave him alone."
She went out, and the door sighed shut.
Felix sat on the plastic chair by the bed and looked at the man in it.
Casper lay with a drip in his arm, brown hair damp on the pillow, looking worn out and very tired.
He was twenty, and he had gone up to an altar and said vows to a stranger so his mother could keep a ventilator.
Felix still wanted to be angry about it.
He found it was harder every time he looked at him.
At three in the morning Casper's eyelids fluttered.
"Felix?"
"I'm here."
"Did I ruin the party?"
"You made it better. Half the room is still googling you." Felix poured water into a cup. "Drink."
Casper sipped, and his hands shook around the cup.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I'll pay you back for the doctor."
"Stop apologizing, I'm not going to tell you again." Felix set the cup down. "I want to ask you something, and I want the truth, even if it's ugly."
Casper nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me about the heat? You were sick in the bathroom, you were sick at the gala. You could have said a word in the car."
