Chapter 20: I Was Wrong to Wait

Domenico's POV

I saw the gun before she did, because I had been watching the door the whole time.

The man in the long coat brought the pistol up in both hands, and he aimed past me at her.

I did not decide anything.

I caught Cara around the waist with my good arm and took her down to the linoleum behind the table.

The shot went through the folding chair she had been standing beside, and the chair spun across the floor.

My bad shoulder hit the ground first, and the pain was white.

I did not let go of her.

"Stay down," I said into her hair.

"Domenico, your arm."

"Stay down."

The hall was full of noise.

Men were shouting and chairs were going over.

Somebody had a gun out on the left side of the room, and then somebody on the right had one too.

Then I heard a heavy voice roar, "Put it down, you son of a bitch!"

I lifted my head.

The big Lombardi capo from the second row had picked up a steel chair in both hands.

He brought it down on the gunman's wrists, and the pistol flew under the table.

The Hoboken captain was on the man's back before he reached the floor.

Two Greco men took his arms and pulled them behind him.

It was over as fast as it had begun.

I lay on my back on the linoleum with Cara's weight along my side and her hand flat on my chest.

She was breathing hard.

She was not hurt.

In the second it took to fall I had thought about every day I had spent not saying it.
