Chapter 6: Hangar 3
Hangar 3 was bigger inside than it looked from the road.
Two helicopters sat nose to tail under the work lights, white with a blue stripe, and one of them had a new coat of paint on the tail boom.
"That's the one," Jude said. "Hollenbeck One."
I did not go near it yet.
On the far wall a screen as wide as a garage door glowed over a long steel desk.
It showed a map of the foothills with six blue dots, and a column of numbers down the left side.
At the top of the column, in bold white letters, it said: PRIORITY LINE.
Under that, the first entry read: D. RIORDAN.
My cell number came right after it.
I read it four times.
"I never asked who put it there," I said.
"I didn't either," Jude said. "It was there when I started on nights, and the rule was in the binder. First number gets first ring, nearest aircraft, no questions."
"Nobody ever told me."
"I see that now."
He opened a laptop on the desk and slid a small memory card out of his shirt pocket.
His forearm still had my gauze on it, a little grayer than when I had left it.
"I've listened to this nine times," he said. "I'll leave if you want to hear it alone."
"Stay."
He pressed a key.
A rushing sound filled the speakers, the rotors and the wind, and then a voice came on that I knew well.
"Hollenbeck One, Dispatch."
It was Jude's voice, closer to the microphone than I had ever heard it.
"Hollenbeck One, I'm four out from Dutch Ravine. I've got a road fire and vehicles with their lights on."
There was a click, and then Beck.
"Hollenbeck One, new tasking. Merriweather Ranch, Ridge Road. Dog in a burning barn. Go."
The time stamp in the corner of the screen said 4:12:03.
