He Reversed His Vasectomy for Another Woman, So I Took Everything novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Nurse Said Congratulations
Lydia brings her husband's forgotten insurance card to his urologist and hears his reversal worked. Minutes later his assistant sends a video from their bed. Her trust account is empty, and she calls Cosimo.
On Friday morning a nurse congratulated me across a full waiting room.
I had only come to drop off my husband's insurance card.
The urologist's office had called my phone at eight, because I was Benton's emergency contact.
His follow-up paperwork was missing a card, and Benton was at his Friday breakfast with my father.
So I drove over with the card in my coat pocket.
The nurse looked at my name on her clipboard and her whole face lit up.
"Lydia McAlister! You're Mr. Collier's wife. Oh, I'm so happy for you both."
"I'm just dropping off his card," I said.
"Of course you are, honey." She leaned over the counter and dropped her voice, which did nothing in a room that small. "I know it's meant to be a surprise. But the reversal took beautifully."
Eight people stopped reading their phones.
"I'm sorry," I said. "The what?"
"His count came back last month. The doctor says you could be expecting by summer."
I held onto the counter.
Benton had his vasectomy five weeks before our wedding.
He had sat on the edge of our bed, held my face and said children were never what he wanted.
"You're all I need, Lyd," he said. "I'll prove it."
For five years I believed him.
I had stopped hoping, and I had stopped grieving, and I had built a whole life on that.
The nurse patted my hand. "He told us he wanted to surprise you. He cried in the consult room."
"He cried," I said.
"Right into the tissue box. Oh, I shouldn't tell you that."
I walked out to my car, and I want to say this plainly, because of what came next.
For almost a full minute I was happy.
I sat in the driver's seat with my hand over my mouth and I laughed.
I thought he had changed his mind and hadn't known how to tell me.
I was already deciding I would say yes before he finished asking.
Then my phone buzzed with a video from Brianna Dugan, Benton's assistant.
She was twenty-two, she wore pink blazers, and she had been to our house for dinner twice.
I pressed play.
It was my bed.
I knew the grey duvet because I had chosen it myself in Copenhagen.
Brianna sat in the middle of it with her knees up, in one of Benton's shirts, holding the phone out at arm's length.
"Hi, Lydia," she said. She was smiling. "I'm sorry to do it like this, but I couldn't wait for him to tell you."
Behind the camera, a man laughed.
It was Benton's laugh.
"Bri," he said. "Put it down, babe."
She didn't put it down.
"I'm nine weeks," she said. "He cried when I told him. He says he's waited his whole life for this."
She tilted the camera so I could see the pillow beside her.
It was the one I slept on.
"He told you the vasectomy was for you," she said. "The reversal was for me. I thought you should hear it from me before it gets around."
The video ended on her smile.
I watched it twice, and the second time I looked at his hand in the corner of the frame, the one with the wedding ring I had picked out for him.
He still wore it.
I texted my father with fingers that wouldn't work.
Dad, I need you. Can you come?
His answer came before I'd put the phone down.
At breakfast with Benton, sweetheart. Call you after.
He had eaten breakfast with Benton every Friday morning for five years, just the two of them.
I had always thought it was sweet.
I wrote back, Okay, and I did not tell him anything.
I opened my banking app to pay the clinic's fee, because my hands needed something to do.
The McAlister trust account was the one my mother left me.
On the first of last month it had held eleven million, four hundred thousand dollars.
The screen said four hundred twelve dollars and eighteen cents.
I refreshed it.
I refreshed it again.
Then I went through the transfers, and every one of them had my signature on it.
I had signed none of them.
I didn't cry.
I didn't call my husband, and I didn't call my father.
I typed a number I had not dialed in five years and had never saved, because I knew it by heart.
So I called Cosimo.
It rang once.
"Lydia," he said.
I hadn't said a word yet.
