Chapter 11: A Problem to Manage

We dressed in the dark, in about a minute, and neither of us said a word.

Cosimo buttoned his shirt wrong.

I zipped my dress crooked.

We rode the elevator down thirty floors with the whole lobby waiting at the bottom.

Brianna sat on a leather bench by the doorman's desk with a pink suitcase between her feet and her coat buttoned to the chin.

Her makeup was gone.

Without it she looked about nineteen.

When she saw me, she stood up so fast the suitcase tipped over.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I know I shouldn't be here. I didn't know where else to go."

"How did you find this address?"

"Benton's driver. He told me Mr. Carraro owned the building." She swallowed. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry about the video."

"Are you."

"I thought you were cold," she said, in a rush. "He said you didn't love him anymore. He said you wouldn't care."

I looked at her.

She was twenty-two years old, and she was carrying my husband's child, and she was trembling.

It was easier to hate her from a distance.

"Upstairs," I said. "Both of you."

Cosimo picked up the suitcase without being asked.

In the elevator, Brianna looked from his unbuttoned collar to my crooked zipper, and went pink.

"Oh," she said. "I'm interrupting."

"Yes," said Cosimo.

"I'm so sorry."

"Don't be," I said. "Stay."

Upstairs I sat her on the long sofa in the living room and Cosimo put a glass of water in her hand.
