Chapter 18: The Toast

Cosimo stood at the study window for an hour with the photograph in his hand.

He did not pace, and he did not call anyone.

I knew what that meant, and it frightened me more than shouting would have.

"You can send people," I said. "I won't ask you not to."

"I know."

"But I'm asking you to let me do it my way."

"Your way takes nine days."

"The Foundation gala is in nine days. Three hundred people, the whole board, the press table. Everything Benton stole, he stole from a room of them."

He turned the photograph over.

On the back, in the same tidy hand as the ledger, he had written: Be reasonable. Come home.

"He knows where my mother is buried," Cosimo said.

"He knows where everyone is buried. That's his talent."

"If I put him in a river you'd understand."

"I'd understand. And then he'd be a man who died in a river, and I'd be the widow, and my father would be a tragedy at his own table." I took the photograph from his hand and set it face down. "I want him standing up in a ballroom. I want him to hear his own voice."

His shoulders came down an inch.

"Tell me the plan," he said.

"The Foundation gala has a toast. The husband of the chair always gives it. Benton has given it four years."

"You're not chair."

"No. My father is, as of Tuesday." I smiled. "And my father is going to send the invitation."
