Chapter 14: Thanksgiving

The Range Rover pulled away from the curb and took the corner too fast.

I stood on Peg's lawn and read the announcement twice.

At home in Winnetka.

Two hundred people in my parents' house, and my sister at a microphone.

"December sixth," Santiago said from the back seat. "That's three weeks."

"That's the room," I said.

He looked at me through the open car door, and then he smiled, slow.

"Your way," he said.

"My way."

Peg locked the grille in her garage that night under a stack of old tires.

Then she called the vet and told them the bird was staying over, because she was in no mood.

Thanksgiving was Peg's idea.

"You're not eating hospital turkey off a tray," she told me. "Bring your people."

"I don't have people."

"You've got a whole night shift that stood up for you in a break room. Bring them."

So I did.

The charge nurse came first, at noon, carrying a turkey he'd deep-fried in his driveway in Cicero.

He wore a Marine Corps sweater and looked terrified of Peg's doilies.

The tech came with his girlfriend and a tray of macaroni and cheese the size of a car door.

The two night nurses came together, with pies and two folding chairs, because they'd been to potlucks before.

The resident came last, with a bag of store-bought rolls and the price tag still on.
