Chapter 17: December Sixth

"I'll be there," I said.

My mother gave a pleased hum. "Good girl. Come at six."

"I'm working a day shift Saturday. I'll come straight from work."

"Not in those awful..."

I hung up.

Santiago was still standing at the end of the bars, close enough to hear every word.

"You're going," he said.

"I'm going."

"Do you want me there?"

I looked at the folder under my arm.

"I want you wherever you want to stand," I said. "That's the deal now."

On Saturday, I worked seven to seven.

At six fifty, the charge nurse came and found me in the supply room.

"Truck's gassed," he said. "The kid's coming too."

"You don't have to."

"Gary." He looked at me like I was slow. "I deep-fried a turkey for you. I'm coming."

I didn't change.

I washed my hands and my face, put my hair behind my ears and pinned my badge on straight.

Navy scrubs, a gray jacket, white sneakers with somebody's blood on the left toe that wouldn't come off.

The folder went inside my jacket. The pink rhinestone went into my pocket.

Peg drove me to Winnetka in the Buick.

The charge nurse's pickup followed us, with the tech in the passenger seat and something long under a tarp in the bed.

Sheridan Road was lined with parked cars for half a mile.

Peg pulled into the circle drive behind a Bentley.
