Rory's POV

I have been in a lot of rooms when the worst thing happened.

A kitchen after the call, a highway at night, a lobby with a gurney.

I have never seen four hundred people decide something at once.

It took only a moment.

They looked at Domenico, and they looked at my sister, and then they started to get out their phones.

Daphne ran for the dais.

She came up the steps in her yellow gown with both hands out, and I put myself between her and Abby before I thought about it.

"Give me the microphone," she said.

"No."

"Rory, give it to me. I can fix this."

"You can't."

"It's a setup! She's been sleeping with you since the funeral. Everyone has seen the photograph!" She turned to the room and raised her voice into the dark. "Her lover is my brother! You're all being used!"

Nobody clapped.

A woman at the nearest table said, in a clear voice, "Sit down, honey."

I have never in my life heard my sister lose an audience.

The room was silent.

On the dais, the chair of the board had taken the second microphone from the stand.

"The Foundation's executive committee is going to meet in the Blue Room in ten minutes," he said. "Mr. Rinaldi, you will join us, and you will bring your resignation."

Domenico nodded.

"Ms. Carrow, your fund is frozen as of this moment."

"You can't freeze..."
