He Sacrificed My Father for His First Love novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: The Check

Domenico's mother was sixty-six and wore pearls to everything, including the street where my father had lived for forty years.

Her driver stayed beside the car.

She walked up my father's stoop without looking at the paint.

"Domenico," she said. "Wait in the car."

He opened his mouth, shut it and went.

That was how I knew who ran the family.

"Abigail," she said to me.

"It's Abby."

"May I come in?"

I let her in because I wanted to see her face when she looked at my father's chair.

She looked at it for exactly as long as it took to decide not to sit in it.

She chose the couch, with her back straight and a leather folder on her knees.

Bea stood in the kitchen doorway with the bat held low and her arms crossed over it.

"Your friend can stay," his mother said. "I have nothing to hide."

"You came to my father's house at night," I said, "with a folder."

"I came to offer my condolences."

"You sent flowers to the funeral home. The card was signed by your assistant."

Her mouth went thin.

She opened the folder and set it on the coffee table.

There was a check on top, written in blue ink.

Two million dollars.

Under it were four stapled pages.

"My son has behaved badly," she said. "I won't pretend he hasn't. But you are a sensible woman, and this family is more than a boy and his girlfriend."

"His wife," I said. "Or I was, till noon today."
