Chapter 6: The Brother

I carried the dish of mints and my father's plastic bag down to the parking garage and stood by my car for a full minute.

Then I noticed a man leaning on the concrete pillar next to it.

He wore a navy jacket with a reflective stripe and held a paper cup of coffee in each hand.

He was tall, and his nose had been broken at least once.

"Abby Bannerman?" he said.

"Who's asking?"

"Rory Carrow." He lifted the second cup an inch. "That one's yours. I didn't know how you take it."

I didn't take the coffee.

"Carrow," I said.

"Daphne is my sister."

I put the bag down on the hood of my car so that my hands were free.

He saw it and didn't step back.

"You're going to hit me," he said.

"I'm thinking about it."

"Okay. Let me say one thing first, and then you can."

"You have ten seconds."

"My mother has never had chemo."

The garage was very quiet.

A car alarm chirped two levels down.

I looked at his face, which was tired and serious and had no trick in it that I could see.

"What did you say?"

"She had a lump out two years ago. A small one. The surgeon said clear, and she's been clear since. She lives in Yonkers, and she bakes four pies a week for her church." He put the coffee down on the pillar's edge. "There's no trial, Abby. There never was."

I hit him.

I slapped him across the face as hard as I could, and my palm stung all the way to the wrist.

He took it without moving his feet.

"Okay," he said, turning his face back. "That was fair."

"You expect me to believe that?" I said. "You stand in a garage and tell me a sick woman isn't sick, and you want me to stand here and be grateful?"
