Chapter 10: He Tells Her
Cormac had left for his shift at half past five, with a thermos and a note on the fridge.
At six, somebody knocked on the door of the flat.
Maura knew the knock.
She opened it in Finn's pajama top and a pair of old scrubs.
Vincent stood on the landing with his coat open and his face grey.
"Don't say anything," he said. "Let me say it first."
"You've been up all night."
"I went to my father's. Then I went somewhere else." He took a breath. "Maura. Finn is alive."
The hall light buzzed.
She heard it very clearly.
"I saw him," Vincent said. "Four hours ago. In a kitchen in Revere. He was eating a cannoli and watching a cartoon about a dog."
Her knees went weak.
She reached for the doorframe and found it, and held on.
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
"You're lying to me again."
"I came here to tell you before I told anyone." His voice broke, and he forced it level. "The old man has him. He lets me live so I can carry his message. I don't have a plan. I don't have a way in. I'm telling you because you're his mother and you have the right to know it before I do one single thing."
He took a phone from his pocket with his bandaged hand.
"He let me film it," he said. "On the way out."
She did not want to take it.
Her fingers took it anyway.
The video was forty seconds long.
It showed a yellow kitchen and a small boy in a striped shirt too big for him.
A man's hand set a cannoli on a plate.
"Say hi to your mama," a voice said off-screen.
Finn looked straight into the lens.
There was cream on his chin.
"Hi, Mama," he said. "I got a cannoli."
She watched it once.
She watched it twice.
On the third time the phone slid out of her fingers, and she did not hear it hit the floor.
She hit Vincent.
