Chapter 8: The Opening

Vincent spent the next day finding out whose men had followed them to the clinic.

He came back with a name, and the name was Carlo's driver, who had vanished the same night.

The casing had come from the armorer's box, and the driver was the only one who had signed for that box.

"So the man who followed us is gone," Maura said. "And the man who could say who sent him is gone with him."

"Yes," said Vincent. "Which means the box is the only door left."

They went back to the mausoleum that night, because the funeral director had finally said he would come.

The director arrived at midnight in a dented van, with a cutting torch, a pair of welding goggles and an altar boy's candle he said he had brought for luck.

"I will do the seam," he said. "I will not look inside. When it is open, I will go and stand outside and pray."

"Fair," said Cormac.

Vincent had come in a black coat with his left arm strapped against his chest.

He had not been asked.

He had walked up to the gate with the two guards he trusted, and the men posted there by his father had looked at his face and stepped aside.

"You're the underboss," the captain of the night watch had said uneasily. "But your father said no one goes in."

"My father isn't here," Vincent said. "I am."

"He'll hear about it by morning."

"I would hope so."

Now he stood at the foot of the stand with a lantern in his good hand.

Maura stood at the head of it with her palms flat on the lid.

She had not taken her hands off it since the director arrived.

"Ready?" he asked her quietly.
