Chapter 21: Grandmother's Ring

The tire iron never reached the portrait.

Cal had come up the steps behind her in two strides, and he caught her wrist in the air.

The iron swung wide and struck the porch rail instead.

It split a rail my grandfather had built, and Marcy screamed at the sound.

"Let go of me!"

"Drop it," Cal said, not loud.

"Let go!"

He turned her wrist outward until her fingers opened.

The iron fell on the boards and rolled and stopped against the portrait's blanket.

She went for his face with the other hand.

He took that wrist too and held both of them, patiently.

She screamed at him, then at me, then at nothing.

It went on for a long time, and I stood in my own yard with the quilt still around my shoulders and let it.

The two women by the sedan had not moved.

The younger one had her phone out, held low, and I saw the little red light of a recording.

"I'm getting this," she said, in a voice that was not steady. "I'm sorry, I'm getting all of it."

"Turn that off!" Marcy shrieked.

"No."

"You were my friend!"

"I was," the woman said. "I sat beside you at the brunch. I told people Greta Holm was a bully. I said it in my own voice, to my own church."

She wiped her face with the back of her wrist.

"I read those messages on Thursday, and I knew by the third one that nobody wrote like that. I knew, and I told myself it was grief."

"It wasn't grief," the older one said. "It was a woman who could not stand to lose."

Marcy stopped screaming.

She hung in Cal's grip, breathing hard.

Then the lights came up the lane.

They were red and blue, and they threw the whole yard into color.
