Chapter 13: Not Only You
Elena's POV
I woke up alone in his bed, with the hat's name still in my head.
Katya.
I found him in the kitchen at seven, in yesterday's shirt, with two cups of coffee going cold on the island.
He hadn't slept.
I took the decaf he had made for me and sat down across from him.
"Tell me what you were going to do this morning," I said.
"Go to Margot's house," he said. "Put the blanket on her table and ask her."
"And she'd say she bought it on Thursday."
"Then I'd say it to her face."
"And she would cry, Maxim. In front of her lawyer, and the board, and anyone with a phone. The man who locks a drawer on a dead baby, shouting at his ex-wife about a blanket."
His jaw went tight.
He knew I was right, and he hated it.
"I can't sit in this apartment," he said, "and let her keep walking around on what she did to you."
"What she did to me."
I set down the cup.
"You want to talk about what was done to me? Fine. I'll start."
He looked up.
"I left without a word," I said. "You're about to tell me that."
"Yes."
"Then say it. You've been carrying it since Scranton."
He was quiet for a long time.
"I learned I was going to be a father from a photograph," he said. "A man in a rain jacket put it on my desk in an envelope. You, on your grandmother's porch, with your hand on your stomach. Twenty-two weeks."
I didn't move.
"I read your resignation four times the day you left," he said. "I told myself you'd call when you were ready. Then Margot told me you'd taken files, and you didn't call, and I started to believe you hated me enough to rob me."
