Chapter 16: Emergency Session
Posy came out of the hospital at eight that morning with a plastic bracelet still on her wrist and her chin up.
"I'm coming," she said. "Don't tell me not to."
"I wasn't going to," I said.
"Yvette said you would."
"Yvette is in the car asleep with her mouth open."
Posy almost smiled.
The boardroom of Lowell Distribution was on the top floor, behind double glass doors.
I had been in that building twice.
The second time I walked through the lobby without being asked to sit.
Inside, nine people sat around a very long table.
Constance was at the far end in a navy suit with her pearls on.
Dalton sat two chairs from her.
A screen on the wall behind him showed the ER hallway photograph.
Elliot's hand was on my wrist, and my face was turned up to his.
Elliot stood at the foot of the table with his jacket buttoned and no notes.
He saw me in the doorway, and his face did not change at all.
I felt it anyway, all the way down.
"I'm sorry," said the chair, a man with white eyebrows, "this is a closed session."
"I'm the woman in the photograph," I said. "I'd like a minute."
"Absolutely not," Dalton said. "Security."
"Let her speak," Elliot said.
"You can't vote on your own removal and you can't invite your mistress."
"I'm not his mistress," I said. "I'm the woman you proposed to, with the baby you want to hold over me, and I'm here with the other woman you married."
Posy stepped forward and stood beside me.
She was small and pale and shaking.
