Chapter 19: The Wedding Date
Willa's POV
At four o'clock on Thursday, a hundred and forty people in good clothes took their seats in the lake club ballroom.
I stood in the doorway in my blue dress, with Elliot on one side and Posy on the other.
Yvette was behind us with a lunch bag.
"In case it goes badly," she said. "I brought snacks."
The quartet was playing something soft.
The roses smelled so strong my eyes stung.
At the far end, under the arch of ivy, Dalton stood in a black tuxedo with a white flower pinned to his lapel.
He looked up the aisle at me and smiled.
It was the smile from the restaurant, the one he had worn when he got down on one knee.
"Ready?" Elliot said quietly.
"No," I said. "Let's go."
I walked up the aisle.
People turned in their seats.
I heard my name pass from row to row, and then a second whisper that went with it: the certificate, the luncheon, the girl who read it into a microphone.
In the third row sat Constance, upright in a lilac suit, her pearls on.
Nobody sat in the seat beside her.
A woman I knew from the raffle moved her purse to the other chair and left the space empty.
I stopped at the foot of the dais.
Dalton held out his hand.
"You came," he said, warm and low. "I knew you would. Everyone, this is my bride."
The room made a small nervous sound.
I did not take his hand.
"I'm not his bride," I said.
I did not have a microphone.
I did not need one.
The ballroom was so quiet my voice carried to the last row.
"Thank you for coming. I'm sorry for the waste of your afternoon. Dalton is already married to someone else, and she's standing right there."
