Chapter 22: Same Night
My water broke at two in the morning on the kitchen floor, in the middle of a snowstorm, three weeks before my due date.
"Elliot," I said.
He was already standing.
I had never seen a man move so fast, or so quietly, or put on one boot and carry the other.
"Bag," I said.
"I have the bag."
"Biscuit."
"Biscuit has food. Biscuit is fine." He crouched in front of me and took my face in his hands. "Can you walk?"
"I'm having a contraction."
"Breathe."
"Don't tell me to breathe. Everyone says that."
"I'll say it differently." He thought. "Squeeze my hand until you break it."
I laughed, and then the pain came, and I squeezed.
The drive usually took fifteen minutes.
It took him four.
He ran two lights and a stop sign.
When we slid into the hospital's drive, a security guard in a parka was already holding a wheelchair.
The ER nurse looked at the clock, then at me, then at the man beside me.
"Ma'am, are you Willa Hartnett? We've had a note about you since yesterday."
"From who?"
"From the labor and delivery aide on nights." She pushed the chair. "She said, and I'm quoting, 'When Willa Hartnett comes through, you send her straight upstairs, no forms.'"
Upstairs, the hall smelled of floor wax and coffee, and every light was too bright.
A woman in green scrubs with a red braid and a clipboard came around the corner at a sprint.
"You're early!" Yvette said. "I'm so glad. Everybody is early tonight. It's a full moon. I've got four rooms going."
