Chapter 9: The Paper One

The nurse told me to stay in bed, and I stayed there for about four minutes.

Then I put my feet on the cold floor and walked to the next bay with one hand on the wall.

Yvette came after me.

"The doctor said no running," she whispered.

"I'm not running."

"You're sneaking."

"It's a slow sneak."

Dalton stood in the hallway with his phone in his hand and his face turned toward the curtain.

He looked at me, then at Elliot, and he did not move.

I pushed the curtain aside.

Posy lay on the bed with an IV in her arm.

Constance had gone to find a doctor, and for a moment there was nobody with her at all.

Her eyes were open.

She turned her head and saw me.

"I didn't know," she said, so fast the words ran together. "I swear. I didn't know any of it was real until you walked in with that paper."

"I believe you," I said.

"You do?"

"You told me not to sign anything. You were trying to warn me."

She nodded and her chin trembled.

"Ten weeks," I said.

"He said it was only the one time." Her fingers twisted the blanket. "He said it was because you'd been fighting. He said you two were never going to have a real wedding."

"We were going to have a real wedding in five days."

"He told me that was for his mother." She stared at the ceiling. "He told me your engagement was a cover so his trust fund wouldn't be cut off. A paper fiancée. He said you were in on it and you were getting paid."

My knees went soft.

I sat down on the foot of her bed.

"I've been paying for that wedding," I said. "With my own money."

"I thought you were an actress," Posy whispered. "I thought you were good at it."
